PRESS RELEASE

Statement on the Senate Vote to Raise Fuel Economy Standards for the First Time in Decades

source: National Resource Defense Council | Jul 13, 07 | submitted by Pat Coate

Washington, D.C, USA - Statement by Ann Bordetsky, NRDC Energy Policy Analyst, on the Senate vote to raise fuel economy standards for the first time in decades: "This is a vote for the auto industry's future, not its past. Automakers have the technology to improve fuel economy. This vote will help push more efficient cars into the marketplace." "Improving overall fuel economy performance will give consumers vehicle choices which will save them billions of dollars a year at the pump. This will slash our oil dependence and cut global warming pollution."

The Natural Resources Defense Council is a national, nonprofit organization of scientists, lawyers and environmental specialists dedicated to protecting public health and the environment. Founded in 1970, NRDC has 1.2 million members and online activists, served from offices in New York, Washington, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Beijing.

how you can help

If you have friends and family who are skeptical about the serious threat of global warming, suggest they see An Inconvenient Truth, available on DVD.

Former Vice-President Al Gore presents a startling array of facts and information about the real threat of global warming and what we need to do about it. This film is not harbinger of doom but rather a rallying cry, a call to each of us to take action. Underneath the dire warnings, you'll find inspiration and a clear message of hope.
